Overview
The Policy Types setting in FileTrac lets administrators define the list of insurance policy types available when creating or editing claims. Policy types categorize the kind of insurance coverage associated with a claim — for example, Homeowners, Commercial, Auto, Flood, or any other coverage category your organization handles. This setting is found in the General Setup column on the Settings page.
Managing Policy Types
Navigate to Settings → General Setup → Policy Types to view and manage the list. From here you can:
Add a new policy type — Enter the name of the new policy type and save. The new type becomes immediately available in the Policy Type dropdown on the claim form.
Edit an existing type — Update the name of a policy type. Existing claims that use the old name will reflect the updated name.
Deactivate a type — Remove a policy type from the active list without deleting historical data. Claims already tagged with the deactivated type retain their assignment.
Where Policy Types Appear
The Policy Type field appears on the New Claim form and in the claim edit view. It is also available as a filter in the Manage Claims search bar and as a column or filter in various reports. Keeping your policy type list clean and current ensures that users select the correct type when entering claims, which improves the accuracy of reporting and data analysis.
Tips
Keep the policy type list focused on the coverage categories your organization actively handles. Too many types can slow down data entry and increase the chance of misclassification.
If a client sends claims with a new coverage type, add the policy type before importing or entering those claims to ensure proper categorization from the start.
Deactivate rather than delete obsolete policy types — this preserves historical data integrity while keeping the active list clean.
