14. Contact Loading Behavior

AddClaim populates contacts in two distinct ways.

Implicit contacts are created from the fixed-purpose field sets on the envelope:

Field set

Creates contact of type

Primary?

Insured* fields

Insured

Yes

SecondaryInsured* fields

Insured

No

Agent* fields

Agent

No (a single agent on a claim is the primary by default)

Claimant* fields

Claimant

Yes

Explicit contacts are passed in the nested <Contacts> wrapper. Each entry uses the schema below (a subset of the Contact type — addresses, phones, type, gender, occupation, notes). The outer and inner element names are both Contacts; a contact set looks like:

<Contacts>
  <Contacts>
    <ContactType>Contractor</ContactType>
    <ContactIsPrimary>false</ContactIsPrimary>
    <ContactFirstName>Marco</ContactFirstName>
    <ContactLastName>Reyes</ContactLastName>
    <!-- ...other contact fields... -->
  </Contacts>
  <Contacts>
    <ContactType>Attorney</ContactType>
    <!-- ...other contact fields... -->
  </Contacts>
</Contacts>

Update Behavior

When AddClaim is called with a ClientCompanyID + ClientClaimNum combination that matches an existing claim, only the fields marked U are updated. All other fields are ignored — even if you supply different values, the existing values remain. This is by design: the update path is intentionally narrow to prevent destructive overwrites of stable claim data.

To make broader updates to an existing claim, use the dedicated update method (UpdateClaimDates for contact and inspection dates) or modify the claim through the FileTrac UI.
