New Claim — Flood (NFIP) Section

How to complete the Flood (NFIP) fields on the New Claim form, including contents details, community and elevation data, construction characteristics, and prior losses.

Overview

The Flood section on the New Claim form captures National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) data required for flood-related claims. This section is hidden by default and appears when you expand the Show/Hide toggle labeled "Flood." Complete these fields whenever the claim involves flood damage to ensure accurate NFIP reporting.

Contents Information

Contents Location — A free-text area where you describe where the insured's personal property was located at the time of loss (for example, "First floor living room and basement storage area"). This detail supports the contents portion of the claim.

Contents Description — A free-text area for summarizing what contents were damaged or lost. Be specific enough to support the adjuster's inventory but concise enough for a quick reference (for example, "Furniture, electronics, and personal documents stored in basement").

Program and Risk

Program — Select the NFIP program type from the dropdown. This identifies the policy program under which the claim falls.

Risk — Select the risk classification from the dropdown. This categorizes the type of insured property for NFIP purposes.

Community Information

Community # — Enter the FEMA community identification number. Every community participating in the NFIP has a unique number assigned by FEMA.

Community Name — Enter the name of the FEMA-designated community associated with the flood zone.

Elevation Data

Elevated — Check this box if the structure is elevated above ground level (for example, on pilings, posts, or a raised foundation).

Lowest Floor Elevation — Enter the elevation of the lowest floor of the insured structure, typically measured in feet relative to the Base Flood Elevation.

Base Elevation — Enter the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) for the property's location as shown on the applicable Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).

Construction and FIRM Data

Construction Date — Enter the date the structure was originally built. This date determines whether the building is considered pre-FIRM or post-FIRM, which affects rating and coverage.

Post FIRM — Check this box if the structure was built after the community's initial Flood Insurance Rate Map became effective. Leave unchecked for pre-FIRM structures.

FIRM Date — Enter the effective date of the Flood Insurance Rate Map applicable to the property's location.

Principal Residence — Check this box if the insured property serves as the policyholder's primary residence. This affects certain NFIP coverage limits and eligibility.

Building Characteristics

Condo Code — If the property is a condominium, enter the applicable condo code. Leave blank for non-condominium properties.

Flood Zone — Enter the flood zone designation from the FIRM (for example, A, AE, V, VE, X). The zone determines the level of flood risk and affects premium calculations.

Number of Floors — Enter the total number of floors in the insured structure, including any basement or enclosure levels used for rating.

Enclosure Type — Select the type of enclosure below the elevated building, if applicable (for example, crawlspace, subgrade crawlspace, or no enclosure).

Garage — Indicate whether the structure includes an attached or detached garage and its characteristics as relevant to the flood risk assessment.

Building Description — Select or enter a description of the building type (for example, single-family dwelling, two-to-four-family dwelling, other residential).

Remarks — A free-text area for any additional notes relevant to the flood claim. Use this for supplemental information that does not fit into the structured fields above, such as special circumstances or adjuster observations about the property's flood exposure.

Prior Losses Table

Below the Flood fields, Evolve displays a Prior Losses table. This table records any previous flood losses associated with the insured property, which is required for NFIP compliance. Each row contains the following columns:

  • Loss Date — The date of the prior flood loss event.

  • Building Payment — The dollar amount paid for building damage in the prior loss.

  • Contents Payment — The dollar amount paid for contents damage in the prior loss.

  • ICC Payment — The Increased Cost of Compliance payment for the prior loss, if applicable.

  • Examiner — The name of the examiner who handled the prior loss.

Use the Find Prior Losses button (located nearby on the claim form) to search for and import historical loss records associated with the property.

Tips

  • The Flood section is only relevant for flood claims. If the claim does not involve flood damage, you can leave this section collapsed.

  • Community # and Flood Zone values can typically be found on the property's Elevation Certificate or the applicable FIRM panel.

  • Accurate elevation data (Lowest Floor Elevation and Base Elevation) is critical for NFIP compliance and may affect the claim outcome.

  • Prior Losses data is required by the NFIP to determine whether a property qualifies as a Severe Repetitive Loss or Repetitive Loss property.
